Butterfly Rearing Stage 3 - Caterpillars By: Tanya Rothe
Stage 3 is the caterpillar stage which can be quite fun. As the caterpillars grow in size, you may need to make a larger cage and more fresh food. It is important that they have plenty of room to move around with good aeration. Something interesting that you will notice is that the caterpillars will eat lots of food, however, they stop several times throughout this stage to rest allowing their bodies to regenerate and continue developing.

This stage can be easily described as the Eat, Poop, Grow, Rest, Eat and poop some more stage. You can tell that they are in this changing process when their bodies get larger and their heads become to appear smaller than their body. Some types of caterpillars even molt their skins because they out grow them and need more room to expand. This is kind of like going from a small T-shirt to a Medium T-Shirt because you out grew it. While this is going on, it is important that you do not disturb them or it could be harmful to the caterpillar growth cycle.
